YOUR PERSONAL ITINERARY IN LONDON

Flights and airports

To make travel booking easier, the main airports all have lists of destinations and the airlines that serve them, with direct links to the their websites.

  • Heathrow airport
  • Gatwick airport
  • Stansted airport
  • London-Luton airport
  • London City Airport: serves Europe and the UK with smaller, short-haul airplanes. It is by far the most central airport with very fast immigration and baggage check facilities and (finally) good public transport links into town. The only snag is that it serves mostly business customers so heavily discounted tickets are rare, and there are few flights at the weekend.

  • If you have the option of different arrival airports, choosing which one to fly into is an important first step (see Getting around London section) ; in general the more you the pay for your flight, the less time and expense you will have travelling into London. Nearly all inter-continental flights arrive at either Heathrow or Gatwick. London City and Stansted serve UK and European flights only.
If you are not a citizen of the EU, the wait at immigration may also taken into consideration. This is typically likely to be worse at Heathrow than Gatwick, and especially so if you arrive in the early morning. Some business class flights offer a ticket to the "Fast-track" immigration service, which can be well worth having. In general we would recommend that you aim not to choose a flight arriving early in the morning, when the immigration queues and baggage waits are worse and when travel into the centre is most stressful.
